FAQ

What is Copyright and neighboring rights?

Copyright and neighboring rights encompasses lawful protection of every artistic creation. If you write a song, draw a cartoon or shoot a movie, you will have these “works” protected by the law. This is what guarantees the possibility of revenues due to use of creations.

What does Copyright Management mean?

In order to being able to collect any revenue from the usage of your creative work, it is necessary to go through several bureaucracies. Since we are talking about immaterial property, legal documents provide the effectiveness of your rights. Contracts, registration of catalogue and oversight are some of the elements necessary to guarantee your income. These activities require time and technical expertise that may affect the clients’ labor, that should concentrate in their work. This is where Solution Music comes in as a management company. The legal, technical and formal aspects is all carried out by us, in order to guarantee to our clients the best solutions to improve their remuneration.

What is the difference between “works” and “phonograms” (recordings)? Copyright and neighboring rights?

A work is that initial creation, the composition, that and artists will use to make its performance. For example, whenever a pianist reads a sheet music and plays it in his piano, he is performing the work displayed on that paper.

If this same pianist records his performances in a studio, the final product is a phonogram, synonym for “recording”. In this way, whenever you hear a song in a digital platform, you are listening to a phonogram that contains a work.

Copyright protects work, the original creation, and neighboring rights protect performances. Consequentially, one could say that Copyright is linked to “works” and neighboring rights are linked to “phonogram”. Songwriters, publishers, performers, sessions musicians and recording labels are the main roles of the music industry, protected by both Copyright and neighboring rights.

Will Solution Music acquire my works/phonograms?
Absolutely not. Solution Music is simply a manager that will seek for the best solutions for you. You do not have to assign your property to our company. You will continue to be the rights holder.
Solution Music is a Publisher? A Recording Label?
No. Solution Music is a Copyright and neighboring rights manager.
I already have an exclusivity contract with a Publisher and/or a Recording Label. Could Solution Music still provide services to myself?

Absolutely. Our services are different from those enterprises, for we manage rights of our clients, in their representation. Actually, our services are highly recommended in this situation, so we can defend our rights before these two enterprises. We are in frequent contact with the major players in order to defend our clients’ interests.
